On Thursday the Ashby-Brandon-Evansville cross country teams competed in the John Hermes Invitational at Fergus Falls. “When we first arrived at the meet, the team was a little overwhelmed with the teams at the meet,” commented A-B-E Head Coach Robert Bosma. “We normally do not run against teams like Alexandria or North Fargo, so it was understandable for the team to be anxious. With that being said, they ran really well. We talked all week about how Fergus is a challenging course with some big hills and tough competition. The team met the challenge and many ran their season best. One of the things we say often throughout the year is everyone has to do the same thing, but only the weak-minded are affected by the hills, or weather, or whatever else. I was impressed with how they attacked the hills and ran with confidence.”

Ashley Paulson was the only female varsity runner for A-B-E. “The other girls ran JV or even junior high as I wanted them to get some confidence,” said Bosma. “Naomi Fournier looked the best she has all season and took well over a minute off her time. Vy (Tuyet Vy Bui) has been struggling with some injuries and looks like she is getting healthy again, which is good as there are only a couple weeks left in the season.”

Bosma continued, “For the boys, Logan Froemming took off with a strong race. I talked to him about ignoring the time and focusing on strategy. Since we run again on Saturday, I wanted him to save something in the tank and not push it too hard. He ran a great race and felt he had more, even though it was his best time this season. Changing his focus made a big difference. Ken Spielman and August Bredberg continue to push each other and are working great. Logan Haseman is another one who continues to improve each meet. Since he is new to CC this year, he is still trying to figure out how to run. Now that he is understanding the race strategy, time is melting away.  It was a great night for the team and it has potential to be a turning point in our season.”
